Racism

Year 7 pupils are learning about what racism is, and what we can do to so that others are treated fairly.

Your EDiT task is to investigate a racist incident or time period. This may be recent, or have happened quite a long time ago – the decision is yours. Below are some suggested topics, however you are more than welcome to find something else.

Example topics:

  • Rosa Parks and the Bus Boycott
  • The life and assassination of Martin Luther King
  • Nelson Mandela and Apartheid in South Africa
  • The death of Stephen Lawrence
  • Racism in football
  • Slavery in the American South

Research

  • Find out what happened in this event, and create a profile explaining who was involved and where it happened. Use photographs and maps to support your information.
  • What happened as a result of this incident? How did members of the public react?
Was there a punishment for those involved? Did the incident cause laws to change?
  • Why is this racist incident important for others to know about?

Now that you have investigated the racist incident, you are to design an artwork or memorial to help educate others about what happened.

Design

Use the information you have found to help you sketch out an artwork or memorial. Try to use items or images that somehow relate to what happened. Your aim is to help explain what happened to other pupils, and to suggest what should be learnt from the incident. You need to make sure that the following things are included – but you can add many more ideas!

  • You need at least one word or quote related to the racist incident
  • You need to feature an object that is linked to what happened
  • You need to include some form of sculpture or artwork to represent hope

When you hand in your EDiT task, you need to include sketches of your ideas – these could be collated in a scrapbook or shown on a poster, or even presented on a PowerPoint!

Please hand the completed project into Mr Joy by Friday 16th March.
