CHOICES lessons incorporate elements of PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education), Citizenship and SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning). The name ‘CHOICES’ is an acronym, representing the different aspects of the curriculum.

CHOICES lessons include use of resources such as videos, interactive websites, and guest speakers to assist in pupils’ engagement and understanding.

Year 5 lessons focus have a core focus on SEAL topics, allowing pupils to get to know each other and improve their own self-esteem. Road Safety and Healthy Lifestyles topics also allow pupils to develop a greater knowledge of how to look after themselves and act responsibly.

In Year 6, pupils begin to participate in more Citizenship-themed lessons, with units on Diverse Cultures, Children’s Rights and the Media. Pupils begin to learn about financial capability with Money unit in the lead up to the SATs exams.

In Year 7, pupils cover PSHE topics such as Thoughts and Emotions, and Sex and Relationships Education (SRE). Citizenship units include a Culture Study of Japan, Elements of Advertising, and Crime.

In Year 8, pupils return to the topic of Financial Capability, incorporating lessons about Careers. Pupils learn about Government and the Electoral Process, and spend time studying PSHE topics including Alcohol, Drugs and SRE. Year 8 pupils also have the opportunity to take home a ‘Ready-or-Not Tot’, baby-like mannequin which simulates the parenting process.
